What Is World EV Day?

08 Sep 2023

World EV Day is a day to celebrate and spread awareness of the benefits of electric vehicles, and encourage their widespread adoption. The day brings together governments, auto manufacturers, organisations, and individuals to shine a light on the potential of EVs, and demonstrate their role in creating a more sustainable future.

Beyond showcasing the importance of electric cars, World EV Day is an opportunity to break down barriers for drivers who may not understand the benefits of owning and driving an EV. Whilst the number of EVs registered on the roads is rising quickly, there is still a large segment of car owners who need a little nudge before taking the plunge into the world of all-electric cars.

When Is World EV Day?

First celebrated in 2020, World EV Day falls on September 9th and serves as an annual global event to raise awareness of owning electric vehicles.

The Rise of Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles are at the very forefront of the global shift towards sustainable transportation, and due to advancing technology, falling battery costs, and growing eco-consciousness, the shift is moving quickly. World EV Day goes hand-in-hand with this fast growth, making September 9th a great opportunity to spread the EV word and encourage drivers to make the electric switch.

There’s also the plain reality of electric vehicles; they are fast becoming, and beyond 2030, will be the most popular form of vehicle on our roads, World EV Day harnesses this reality.

In the UK alone there are over 760,500 EVs registered; a whopping 14.5% increase on the number of EVs registered by the end of 2022 just 8 months ago. Combine that growth with the rapidly expanding network of EV charging facilities, plus the improvements to charging technology, and it becomes clear that the future of auto is electric, and the UK is embracing it.

The Key Objectives of World EV Day

Beyond the headline goal of spreading awareness of the benefits of electric vehicles, and encouraging their widespread adoption, World EV Day also promotes six key objectives.

  1. Environmental Sustainability: One of the primary goals of World EV Day is to highlight the environmental benefits of electric vehicles. EVs produce zero emissions, reduce air pollution, and mitigate climate change.
  2. Cleaner Air: The promotion of EVs contributes to improved air quality, especially in urban areas where air pollution poses a severe health risk to residents and visitors.
  3. Energy Efficiency: EVs are more energy-efficient than traditional vehicles, which helps reduce the overall energy consumption in the transportation sector.
  4. Reduced Dependence on Fossil Fuels: As EVs become more widespread, the global dependence on fossil fuels for transportation diminishes, reducing the public’s vulnerability to fluctuations in oil prices and supply.
  5. Innovation and Technology: World EV Day serves as a platform to showcase the latest advancements in EV technology, including longer-range batteries, faster charging infrastructure, and innovative vehicle designs.
  6. Policy Advocacy: It's also a day to call for supportive policies and incentives from governments to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, such as tax credits, rebates, and investments in charging infrastructure.
