In 2023, Exeter was named one of the most dog friendly cities in the UK thanks to the local dog friendly beaches and the high number of pubs and cafés that welcome our furry friends. If you’re planning a dog friendly day out in and around Exeter, take a look at our latest guide:

Dog friendly beaches near Exeter:

Exmouth Beach

Exmouth is home to two miles of golden sands with a beautiful coastline where you will often spot kite surfers and paddle boarders enjoying the water. Dogs are welcome at the two far ends of the beach between May and October. For the rest of the year they are free to use the whole beach.

Budleigh Salterton Beach

Take in the Jurassic Coast at Budleigh Salterton. This long pebble beach is two and a half miles long with an assortment of beach side cafes to add to the holiday atomosphere. Dogs are allowed at either end of the beach all year round however the centre portion is restricted between May and the end of September.

Ness Cove Beach, Shaldon

Dogs are welcome on Ness Cove Beach all year round so is a great spot for your dog to go for a walk and swim. Located in the seaside village of Shaldon, access to the shingle and sand beach is through an original smugglers tunnel.

Dog friendly food and drink spots in Exeter:

Double Locks

Walk along the Exeter Ship Canal and take in the River Exe whilst on route to this unbeatable location. The Double Locks has a seasonal menu filled with classic pub favourites. Dogs are welcome inside the pub or if the sun is out, take in the pub gardens after exploring the local scenery.

Hub Box

In the heart of the city, Hub Box serves up award winning burgers and local craft beers. With the South West at the heart of its menu, there’s something for everyone so if you’ve been visiting the dog friendly shop in Exeter city centre, Hub Box is a great spot for a bite to eat.

Mango’s Café

Exeter Quay is a prime beginning or end spot for many local dog walks, it’s also the home of Mango’s Café. If you’re looking for an independent café to enjoy breakfast or a light lunch, Mango’s is a great place for you and your pooch to watch the world go by.

Mill on the Exe

Just a stone’s throw from the city centre, the Mill on the Exe sits on the River Exe and is the ideal spot to enjoy some traditional pub food with a drink at the end of a busy week. Dogs are allowed in the bar area. Accommodation is there for those looking to stay overnight with dog friendly rooms also available.

Dog friendly activities in Exeter:

Darts Farm Shop, Topsham

Just on the outskirts of Exeter, sits Darts Farm a pioneering Farm Shop filled with local artisan products as well as produce from the onsite farm. Dogs are welcome on the farm walk, fields and play area however they are not allowed in the Farm Shop or Restaurant.

Powderham Castle, Exminster

If it’s a bit of Exeter history you’re looking for, Powderham Castle has you covered. The castle and grounds includes shops, a café and a small farm – something for everyone to enjoy. Dogs are allowed in all areas that the public are welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times.

Saddles and Paddles, Exeter Quay

Hire a canoe for a different kind of adventure with your pooch from Saddles and Paddles. Cruise down to the Double Locks for lunch and enjoy being out on the water.
